Carousel (2018-04-Imperial Theatre-Broadway)

Type de série: Revival
Théâtre: Imperial Theatre (Broadway - Etats-Unis)
Durée : 5 mois 1 semaine
Nombre : 47 previews - 181 représentations
Première Preview : Wednesday 28 February 2018
Première : Thursday 12 April 2018
Dernière : Sunday 16 September 2018
Mise en scène : Jack O'Brien
Chorégraphie : Justin Peck
Producteur :
Avec : Joshua Henry (as Billy Bigelow), Jessie Mueller (as Julie Jordan), Renée Fleming (as Nettie Fowler), Lindsay Mendez (as Carrie Pipperidge), Alexander Gemignani (as Enoch Snow), Margaret Colin (as Mrs. Mullins), Amar Ramasar (as Jigger), Brittany Pollack (as Louise), and John Douglas Thompson (as Starkeeper)
Commentaires : "You'll Never Walk Alone"... Those reassuring words once again ring out on the Great White Way with the Broadway revival of Rodgers & Hammerstein's classic musical Carousel, which features a starry cast headlined by two-time Tony Award nominee Joshua Henry, Tony Award winner Jessie Mueller, and opera sensation Renée Fleming.

Infused with brand new choreography by New York City Ballet's Justin Peck, the dance sequences range from dreamily graceful to strikingly masculine and have given new life to this timeless classic. In addition, the difficult theme of domestic abuse is sensitively addressed by director Jack O'Brien for the modern day audience and we are reminded how progressive Rodgers & Hammerstein actually were to shine a light on the topic in a Broadway musical way back in 1945.

This production boasts a beautifully crafted scenic design by Santo Loquasto that allows the audience to admire and be inspired to use their own imaginations in equal measures. He paints a picture of a bygone era that has a deliberately hazy atmosphere about it, as if being recalled from a distant memory. It blends with Rodgers & Hammerstein's sumptuous score to great effect and the production delivers an inescapable air of nostalgia as a result.
Presse : "Blame it on God, or the fates, or — to use the metaphor of choice here — the stars. But when Billy meets Julie in the heartfelt, half-terrific revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel... you can tell they’ve been felled by a force beyond their comprehension or control." Ben Brantley for New York Times

"Carousel has such a glorious score that the music always shines bright — even in a revival as wobbly as the one now on Broadway at the Imperial Theatre." Joe Dziemianowicz for New York Daily News

"Carousel's sumptuous new Broadway revival plows steadily through the show’s darker currents. Director Jack O’Brien invites us to admire the show as an exemplar of classic American musical theater, lovingly emphasizing its virtues." Adam Feldman for Time Out New York

"Carousel embraces darkness and brutality while balancing sorrow with jubilation, tragedy with redemption in a show whose emotional complexity is equaled by its ravishing score. What a gift to have it back on Broadway in a magnificently sung revival that breathes pulsing new life into this shimmering masterwork." David Rooney for Hollywood Reporter

"Audiences encountering Joshua Henry's electrifying performance as the charismatic but star-cursed Billy Bigelow will long remember the experience. In this new Broadway revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Carousel, Henry shows off the exceptionally beautiful voice of a genuine actor-singer, a voice that while warm and mellow, can also soar with joy and tremble in despair." Marilyn Stasio for Variety

Green (Mr. Beauregard), Trista Dollison (Violet Beauregard), Jackie Hoffman (Mrs. Teavee), Michael Wartella (Mike Teavee)
Presse : "Don’t expect a sugar rush from “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” the new musical that opened at the Lunt-Fontanne Theater on Sunday. This latest adaptation of Roald Dahl’s winningly sinister children’s story from 1964 is — thank heaven — no sweeter than the two film adaptations it inspired, starring Gene Wilder (1971) and Johnny Depp (2005). Then again, this big but tentative show — which features a book by David Greig and songs by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman — doesn’t burst with flavor of any kind, at least not during its exposition-crammed first act. Only in its second half does the show acquire a distinct taste, and it definitely isn’t confectionary." Ben Brantley for New York Times

"“Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” is a middle-of-the-road musical with a pale score, a flavorless book and a dearth of eye candy that could have at least made it a spectacle." Joe Dziemianowicz for New York Daily News

"For the most part, Jack O’Brien directs this dull, clunky adaptation of the book and movie with none of the wit of the former nor the dreamy wonder of the latter. Maybe kids will enjoy the gaudy design and veneer of sassy satire, but when you bite down, there’s only empty shell. Younger audiences can cheer, but adults are bound to conclude that Charlie is like what happens with an Everlasting Gobstopper: lots of sucking." David Cote for Time Out New York

"For those adults among us who prefer our cocoa confections bittersweet and extra-dark, that intro serves as a warning that Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the perversely charmless new musical based on the classic Roald Dahl story, will have little to offer grown-up audiences. Kids might find more to enjoy in this frantic Frankenstein's monster of a show, but that doesn't make it less of a misfire." David Rooney for Hollywood Reporter

"It’s hard to predict how grownups might feel about this inflated musical adapted from previous stage and film treatments of Roald Dahl’s beloved novel, “Charlie & the Chocolate Factory.” (There’s scant evidence that anyone went back to the original 1964 book for inspiration.) Savvy kids, however, might stage a revolt after seeing how the uncanny darkness of Dahl’s imagination has been lightened and brightened in helmer Jack O’Brien’s mechanized production." Marilyn Stasio for Variety

Commentaires : The star of this show was the 71 year old American comedian Jerry Lewis. A 15 minute section of the Second Act was tailored to his presence, enabling him to hi-jack the show, breaking into his nutty-professor voice, tossing canes in the air and failing to catch them, telling joke after joke in his old vaudeville act, and then just as suddenly returning to the script and the plot. Jerry Lewis fans loved it. The show itself was much praised on its first return to London after some 40 years, but it ran for just over nine weeks.

An expected transfer to the Savoy Theatre from 16 October 1997 was cancelled.
Presse : NICK CURTIS of the EVENING STANDARD describes the show as making “ a modest start to its London season “ and going on to describe Jerry Lewis’s performance as “ sometimes good, sometimes bad, and sometimes just plain ugly”

MICHAEL BILLINGTON of THE GUARDIAN says , “not wildly exciting but harmlessly pleasant.”.

MICHAEL COVENEY of the DAILY MAIL enjoyed the show and particularly liked the leading actors performances, saying, “Lewis is a treat, Miss Nixon a black bombshell in pink underwear”

CHARLES SPENCER of THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says “Damn Yankees is the kind of musical they don't write any more. Emerging from the theatre with a fatuous smile on my face, I wished that they did.”

Presse : "The latest edition of 'The Front Page' is … diverting. Pretty darn good. At moments, very funny indeed." Ben Brantley for New York Times

"Stop the presses: Nathan Lane saves the day — and the play — again." Joe Dziemianowicz for New York Daily News

"If there’s a downside to seeing 'The Front Page,' it may be realizing that American theater can’t—or won’t—produce plays like it anymore: big-cast, unsentimental, piety-puncturing social comedies that dare to offend." David Cote for Time Out New York

"This sap of a play is older than yesterday's news. But, I'll level with you. This is the God's honest truth: A fellow named Nathan Lane somehow saves it." Mark Kennedy for Associated Press

"Drawing on a starry cast toplined by Nathan Lane and John Slattery, Jack O’Brien directs an impeccable revival that delights in the tasteless vulgarity of that fabled era." Marilyn Stasio for Variety

Commentaires : “The Full Monty” started life as a 1997 British film, directed by Peter Cattaneo. Set in Sheffield it was a non-musical comedy which managed to deal seriously with subjects like unemployment, father’s rights, depression, impotence, homosexuality, working-class culture and suicide. The musical version changed the setting to Buffalo, New York, but stayed very close to the film, changing some names and introducing a few new characters.
The musical opened on Broadway in October 2000 and ran for 769 performances. The London cast included six of the original Broadway cast members and received excellent notices. Dora Bryan was replaced after 12 weeks (due to “filming commitments”) by Lynda Baron, and after the agreed six months, the American leads were replaced with David Ganly (Dave), Cornell John (Noah), Ben Richards (Jerry), Paul Keating (Ethan), Samuel James (Malcolm) and Tony Timberlake (Harold). It ran for 9 months.

Commentaires : Sera joué successivement au

> Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre 23/1/15 - 7/6/15

The play was originally called "Broadway, Broadway" and had closed during tryouts in Philadelphia in 1978. Geraldine Page and James Coco were in the Philadelphia cast, and the play was set to open on Broadway at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre. However, the Philadelphia reviews were negative and the Broadway opening was cancelled.
In 1984, McNally said that after "Broadway, Broadway" closed he was no longer confident, but finally realized that having a show close is not the worst thing that could happen. For the Broadway run the play was rewritten to bring the story and references up to 2014. The role of Emma was cut and replaced by Gus, an aspiring actor employed as the party's butler.
Presse : "All the cast members fulfill their raisons d’être, which is to sling a whole lot of mud in the nicest possible way. As for Mr. McNally’s play itself...it mostly has the depth of a shot glass (and I mean that in the nicest possible way). It is to Broadway what Neil LaBute’s 'The Money Shot,'...is to Hollywood - an R-rated sitcom satire with some very funny jokes." Ben Brantley for New York Times

"Besides good old dependable Nathan Lane, this diversion has good timing going for it. People are desperate for laughs and comedies on Broadway are bloody rare. If only McNally’s 'Play' was more well-done." Joe Dziemianowicz for New York Daily News

"Mullally and Lane alone are almost worth the price of admission, with a sense of timing that’s a thing of wonder. As for the rest? It’s barely a play." Elisabeth Vincentelli for New York Post

"Jack O’Brien’s shiny, bouncy production looks great and hey it’s McNally: there are good bitchy one-liners here and there. But too few. Only a play? It’s barely a play." David Cote for Time Out New York/NY1

"It seemed to be a dream cast: Nathan Lane, Matthew Broderick, Stockard Channing, Megan Mullally, F. Murray Abraham. But, like children, stars don't always play well together. The result is that Terrence McNally's comedy 'It's Only a Play' is only amusing rather than drop-dead funny." Robert Feldberg for The Record

"Theatergoers who pay top dollar – and higher – to see the show will not be disappointed by its classy looks and energetic playing, even though 'It’s Only A Play' winds down long before it is over." Michael Sommers for New Jersey Newsroom

"It's in Lane's dynamite early scenes with gifted newcomer Micah Stock that this funny if flimsy comedy really fires on all cylinders, while Broderick underwhelms in a key role." David Rooney for The Hollywood Reporter

"Laugh if you must — and you really must laugh at McNally’s unquenchable wit — but those sloppy-kiss tributes to the theater delivered by Peter and James are deeply felt and honestly moving. And if you don’t share the gooey sentiments, you really shouldn’t be at this show." Marilyn Stasio for Variety

Dernière : Saturday 27 August 2011
Mise en scène : Jack O'Brien
Chorégraphie : Jerry Mitchell

Commentaires : The musical opened with previews on 22nd February 2010, originally directed by Jack O’Brien and with lyrics by Glenn Slater. Although it was praised for its lavish staging, and received a few excellent notices, it was generally felt to be clunky and exceptionally dark and gloomy. It was rapidly nicknamed “Paint Never Dries”. Later in the year a new version was rehearsed simultaneously with the evening performances and the show closed for four days in November 2010 for substantial re-writes. It re-opened with new direction from Bill Kenwright, new choreography from Bill Deamer, and some new lyrics by Charles Hart. The London production closed on 27 August 2011 after a disappointing run of fewer than eighteen months.
Presse : "There is much to enjoy in Andrew Lloyd Webber's new musical. The score is one of the composer's most seductive. Bob Crowley's design and Jack O'Brien's direction have a beautiful kaleidoscopic fluidity. And the performances are good. The problems lie within the book, chiefly credited to Lloyd Webber himself and Ben Elton, which lacks the weight to support the imaginative superstructure...In short, the show has much to commend it and the staging is a constant source of iridescent pleasure. But, as one of the lyrics reminds us, 'diamonds never sparkle bright unless they are set just right'. Although Lloyd Webber's score is full of gems, in the end a musical is only as good as its book. With a libretto to match the melodies, this might have been a stunner rather than simply a good night out."
Michael Billington for The Guardian

"Dismally implausible plot...The blogosphere has been teeming with views of Lloyd Webber’s long-awaited Phantom II. For some, Love Never Dies is 'Paint Never Dries', and for others the composer is at his musical best. I tend to agree with both factions....Bob Crowley (Designs] successfully evokes much of Phantasma, helped by projections of spooky horses on carousels. Yet that’s all rather cursory, as is the choreography, which doesn’t amount to a lot more than the inevitable bathing beauties bouncing about on the beach. "
Benedict Nightingale for The Times

"Lloyd Webber’s finest show since the original Phantom, with a score blessed with superbly haunting melodies and a yearning romanticism that sent shivers racing down my spine....The show may ultimately prove too strange, too dark, too tormented to become a massive popular hit, but I suspect its creepy allure will linger potently in the memory when frothier shows have been long forgotten. "
The Daily Telegraph

"What is in no doubt is the technical excellence of Jack O'Brien's seamlessly fluent, sumptuous (and sometimes subtle) production, or the splendour of the orchestra which pours forth Lloyd Webber's dark-hued, yearning melodies as if its life depended on them."
Paul Taylor for The Independent

"It doesn’t really smoke into life until the 20th minute and even then it splutters for a while. Finally, the singing and the ingenious staging combine to show the Lloyd Webber orchestration to its full glory, but, boy, it takes an age."
Quentin Letts for The Daily Mail

"While Lloyd Webber’s music is at times lavishly operatic, the tone is uneven. There are no more than a couple of songs that promise to live in the memory, the duets don’t soar, and the ending is insipid. Admirers of Phantom are likely to be disappointed, and there’s not enough here to entice a new generation of fans."
Henry Hitchings for The Evening Standard

"Sets and special effects cannot be faulted, the singing is terrific...a stunning ending. But phantastic? Afraid not."
Bill Hagerty for The Sun

"Musically, it is pleasing enough...Visually, the show is stunning in places."
Matthew Hemley for The Stage

"This is an elegant and clever sequel to Phantom...It is a great night out."
Paul Callan for The Daily Express

"While lushly orchestrated (by David Cullen with Mr. Lloyd Webber), the score is, for the most part, so slow that you have time to anticipate Mr. Slater’s next leaden rhyme. Each of the songs — which range from bathing-beauty frolics to power-chord operetta ballads — spins a single tune until it loses its tread."
Ben Brantley for The New York Times

"Frequently clunky and clumsy...Lloyd Webber's score, too, seems like a rehashed parade of pastiche and throbbing crashing-chord melodies."
Mark Shenton for Entertainment Weekly

"Watching the sequel only makes you appreciate the achievement of the original."
David Benedict for Variety

"The musical is impressive and enjoyable, even with its heavy hokum and creakiest of plots."
Warwick Thompson for Bloomberg News

Commentaires longs: The Houston Grand Opera production which opened on September 25, 1976 helped to turn the tide. For the first time, an American opera company, not a Broadway production company, had tackled the opera. This production was based on Gershwin's original full score and did not incorporate the cuts and other changes which Gershwin had made before the New York premiere. It allowed the public to take in the operatic whole as first envisioned by the composer. In this light, it became clear that Porgy and Bess was indeed an opera. Donnie Ray Albert, Clamma Dale and Larry Marshall starred, respectively, as Porgy, Bess and Sportin' Life. This production won the Houston Grand Opera a Tony Award—the only opera ever to receive one—and a Grammy Award.
